Legal Aid Agencies and Other Non-Profit Groups in Contra Costa County, California

Legal aid agencies are non-profit organizations that provide free legal services to people below a certain income level. Before you can get help from a legal aid agency, you usually have to qualify for their help based on your low income. Legal aid agencies usually help with domestic violence cases, family law, evictions, public benefits, immigration, employment issues, and other case types that can cause serious problems in a person's every day life. 

Non-profit public interest organizations, like groups concerned with civil liberties or housing discrimination, may be able to help you. These groups sometimes have staff lawyers who might be able to handle your case. Others provide legal help only to groups of people rather than to individuals. For example, they might help you and your neighbors convince your city council to install a traffic light at a busy intersection.

In 2000, three Bay Area legal services programs, each with its own identity, history, and resources, came together to form Bay Area Legal Aid. BayLegal is committed to providing meaningful access to the civil justice system through quality legal assistance regardless of a client's location, language or disability.

Contra Costa County Crisis Center: 211 Data Base Opens new window
The mission of the Contra Costa Crisis Center is to keep people alive and safe, help them through crises, and connect them with culturally relevant resources in the community. Its 24-hour crisis lines, face-to-face grief counseling program, homeless services, youth services, and 211 information and referral program accomplish this.

Contra Costa Senior Legal Services Opens new window
Its mission is to provide free, civil legal services to residents of Contra Costa County who are sixty years of age or older, with an emphasis on seniors who are in the greatest social and economic need. The highest priority is placed on matters that affect basic needs, such as preventing the loss of housing and preserving financial, physical and individual rights.

Legal Services for Children Opens new window
Legal Services for Children (LSC) was founded in 1975 as one of the first non-profit law firms in the country to provide free legal representation and social work services to children and youth.  It represents children and youth in cases that include legal guardianship, dependency, school discipline, immigration, emancipation, and restraining order proceedings.

A Safe Place Opens new window
Project Safe Place began in Louisville, Kentucky in 1983 as a short-term shelter for youth at risk. Its success prompted the implementation of Project Safe Place across the United States, including in Contra Costa County.  Safe Place allows youth to access help in the early stages of crisis, which gives them a much better chance of affecting a lasting resolution to the problem.

STAND! For Families Free of Violence leads the community in ending domestic violence, child abuse and rebuilding lives. In addition to a complete spectrum of prevention, intervention, and treatment programs, STAND enlists the efforts of the communities it serves, as well as partners and institutions striving with us to stop violence and child abuse.
